Name in history and literature.Yaropolk - this name was borne by six Russian princes who lived in the 10th-12th centuries. Especially remarkable is the fate of Yaropolk I (945-980), the son of Svyatoslav Igorevich, the grandson of Vladimir the Holy. Having gone on a campaign on the Danube Bulgarians, Svyatoslav planted Yaropolk in Kiev. Shortly after the death of Svyatoslav (972), civil strife began between his sons. The brother of Yaroslav, Oleg Drevlyansky, killed Ljuta, the son of the governor Sveneld, the chief adviser of Yaropolk, while hunting. The young prince, avenging the murder, launched a war against his brother and defeated Oleg, the latter being killed. Then Yaropolk sent his townspeople to Novgorod, from where his brother Vladimir, frightened by the death of Oleg, fled across the sea. Yaropolk began to reign in one place in Russia. In 980, Vladimir returned with a mercenary Varangian army and went to Yaropolk, having captured the city of Polotsk dearly, because the daughter of the Polotsk prince Rogovold, the beautiful Rogned, preferred Yaropolk to him. Vladimir married Rogned by force, and then, with the assistance of the traitor-boyar Blud, Yaropolk’s chief adviser on Sveneld’s death, captured Kiev. Yaroslav listened to the cunning council of Blud, fled from Kiev and shut up in the city of Rodna, at the mouth of the river Ros.Being besieged by Vladimir, tormented by hunger (from which the proverb is preserved for a long time: “Trouble as in the Kind”), Yaropolk entered into negotiations. Trusting his brother’s peace proposals, he went to Vladimir’s headquarters, but at the entrance to it was treacherously killed by two Varyags, who were waiting in ambush.
