March 21 is the World Day of Man with Down Syndrome. This day was chosen to show that Down syndrome is associated with the presence of 21 chromosomes in three copies in the body cells. This date the UN officially entered the calendar of events on November 10, 2011.
World statistics show that 1 out of 700 children are born with this syndrome. A special child can appear in any family, because such a probability is due to genetic accident. In Ukraine, according to official information, 420 people are born with Down syndrome every year.

Today a massive LOTS OF SOCKS action will take place all over the world, initiated by the international organization Down Syndrome International. In Ukraine, the action will be organized by the UBO Down Syndrome.
In Ukraine, there is no any system model of support and professional help for people with Down syndrome.
According to Tatyana Mikhaylenko, organizer of the rally in Ukraine, on this day each person can wear colorful socks and feel different than everyone else and find out what life is like under the watchful eyes of others.
Today, people who express support and tolerance for people with Down syndrome will wear bright unpaired socks, leggings or socks, or an extra sock, as a symbol of an extra chromosome.
In the world, there has long been a well-developed model for accompanying such children and their families. According to activists of public organizations, Ukraine still lacks any systemic model of support and professional help for people with Down syndrome and their families. This situation often leads to abandonment of children in maternity hospitals.
Also today, a conference devoted to World Day for People with Down Syndrome will be held at United Nations Headquarters. Article 27 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will be considered.
