Whether the approaches to diagnosis differ depending on the age of the woman and her heredity, how to recognize breast cancer at an early stage and whether it is possible to treat cancer during pregnancy - said Fatih Agalar, member of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
It is known that breast cancer is treatable the better, the earlier it is detected. According to Bookimed, the international patient support center, more than 90% of women got rid of cancer completely if they started treatment at stages 1 and 2 of the disease. What can help detect cancer as early as possible and how to treat the initial stage of breast cancer - says a Turkish professor from the clinic "" (Istanbul).
“It is quite easy to diagnose breast oncology if a woman is attentive to her health and conducts regular self-examinations,” says Dr. Agalar. - It is primarily about visual inspection and palpation. The first signs of breast cancer in women, such as the appearance of seals, bulges or contractions, discoloration of the skin or the appearance of "lemon peel" should cause a visit to the doctor. " An independent survey should be carried out monthly on the 7–10 day of the cycle.
The first signs of breast cancer in women
- check the laundry, in the places where it touches the nipples - there should be no blemishes on it
- inspect the nipples and areola - there should be no redness, peeling, rashes or other skin changes
- standing in front of the mirror, put your hands behind your head and pay attention to the shape of the chest - skin tension or bulge
- lie on the bed, put a cushion under the scapula to slightly raise the chest, and three or four fingers (right hand to inspect the left breast and left hand for the right) feel each centimeter of the breast up to the armpits. You can move from top to bottom or in a circle - as you prefer.
The annual examination by a mammologist is recommended for all women, especially over 40, even if an independent examination did not show anything suspicious. The fact is that sometimes a tumor can develop deeply and then even an experienced specialist will find it difficult to detect it on palpation.
The main research method, when examined by a doctor, is mammography, the results of which, if necessary, are supplemented by ultrasound data. In case of suspicion of a malignant process, a biopsy and histological examination are performed.
During pregnancy and during breastfeeding, it becomes more difficult to diagnose cancer due to the natural changes in the size and shape of the mammary gland. At the same time, due to a change in the hormonal status, it is during pregnancy that the accelerated growth of cancer cells and the more malignant course of the disease are noted.
Therefore, in some cases and depending on the time (not earlier than the third month), small doses of chemotherapy can be used to slow the development of cancer, because by the time of birth it can spread greatly. Even surgery can be performed in the third trimester. If the disease is detected at 8 months, then most doctors will prefer to begin treatment after delivery.

Particular attention should be paid to their health by women who have had cancer in the family, especially if it is breast or ovarian cancer. It is necessary to speak about such cases to the mammologist and gynecologist during the examination.
